Observances 1-23-12 …

Today I celebrate the coming of snow to the Tahoe Sierra and Reno.  This has been the driest winter of the dozen I have lived here, and I am planning a Wednesday or Thursday ski day, my first of the season, and more, we need moisture to prevent fires.  Last week, some twenty houses burned south of Reno, and I extend condolences to those who lost their homes in yet another wild-assed winter wild fire.

And today in 1957, the Wham-O toy corporation produced their first run of flying plastic discs, which later became known as “Frisbees.”  The first discs where called “Pluto Platters,” and legend has it, the word Frisbee harkens to the Frisbie Pie Company of Bridgeport Connecticut.  When the pie was done, kids used to toss the aluminum tins they called frisbies, but Wham-O dubbed the platter “Frisbee” in 1958.  I continue to enjoy throwing and catching a Frisbee with like-minded friends.  I cannot calculate the effects of the Frisbee on my generation …

And I am moving forward with the selection of short stories for the Spring edition of My Audio Universe.  In a meeting of the folks who control the destiny of the show, we decided to limit the length of any short story we produce to 2,000 words.  As words translate directly into time, we have exactly 59:00 minutes a quarter to get as much of the best we can find out there … and I have already found several gems in the vast landscape of online literary publishing.

Writing and production notes:  I have two more stories nearing completion in audio and text titled Magnanimity and LDP (Lobby Dustpan), both my best work ever.  And months ago I submitted text and audio of three pieces to select magazines, and I believe my first acceptance of 2012 is imminent …

Reading and journaling continues to good effect …  a few months ago, my wife and I decided to celebrate our tenth anniversary by merging our personal libraries into one “living library” as we like to call it.  The dusty, utterly disruptive effort took longer than expected.  But now, every morning I face the library and decide the next reading project (s) … wonderful … we’ve made categories for book length fiction, collections of short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, philosophy, religion, reference, and archived literary periodicals, and various other little sections of oddball books we just cannot part with … alphabetical by author …

Finally, I must confess an addiction … after dinner when I become too tired to read, I sometimes listen to vintage radio drama and construct structures with a toy known as Geomags.  My wife first got them to use in a science class, and since I saw them in her office, my personal collection of sticks and balls has grown continually.  I have photographs of roughly forty designs … my architectural goal is to create a building that serves as both an over the horizon radar facility and a bowling stadium … The psychological well-being of pilots during transoceanic flights, when they are out of radar contact, is important for people everywhere … and the many splendored satisfactions of hosting bowling conferences are obvious …
